It’s been a great year for Rachel and Traveling Light (Kat Wallace on fiddle and Mike Siegel on bass). Rachel was among the six winners of the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competition. The more I listen to Rachel’s songwriting the more clearly it stands out for its strength – bright, smart, full of feeling. And what a voice to bring songs to life!
Rachel and the band are all over the festival circuit this summer. They played the Library of Congress! And she released the album Heartless Things in May. Not only that, Rachel tells me that there’s more album release news to come. She may spill the secret when you see her play in our living room. We think she and Traveling Light are only now getting some of the attention they deserve.
Come and see for yourself.

Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light
One word about music and and the internet from me, John. You can hear a lot of Rachel and the band if you search the web. Feel free! There’s a lot to appreciate.
But speaking just for me, I have to remind myself that first encounters and genre labels don’t do justice to any music. I try not to evaluate music I hear, especially on a small screen in low fidelity, the same way I pick out oranges at the supermarket: “Do I like this? Too soft? Not ripe? Not what I expected?” Live music is not just about hearing. It’s not always about liking it on first encounter for that matter Not liking a piece may be about my mood. Live music is also about directly feeling, experiencing, and sharing a never-to-return, in-the-flesh moment with other people.

About concert day
Our living room holds 35 seats. As we receive your RSVPs, we’ll hold a chair for you, count on your donation, and post the number of seats remaining on this page.
How should I make my suggested donation?
Cash is king! We recommend bringing folding money with you when you come. Think of your donation and any additional tip as a tax-free gift to the artists. The artists are counting on you. If you can’t make it after all, consider making a donation (for example, by Venmo) even in your absence.
Where is the concert, exactly?
Carlisle, MA. And about one week before the date, I’ll send you a reminder note with the street address and some parking advice.
Will there be merch?
We hope so! We encourage artists to bring their recordings and any other cool stuff they’ve produced for sale. Get ’em signed? I bet you can.
Relax, hang, chat
Laurelyn bakes cookies. She used to bake them as her full time job, so these are not your mother’s cookies! BYOB and tip it responsibly. Come a little early, get a good seat, meet some new friends. And usually, the artists stay for informal chat afterwards.
