Nov 16: Sadie Gustafson-Zook & Luke Concannon

Sadie Gustavson-Zook and Luke Concannon

In the summer of 2024, I went to music camp for the first time. Sadie Gustafson-Zook was one of my teachers. Hers was a new, unforgettable, name to me. She taught guitar, baffling this beginner with moveable chord shapes. She was so patient. But then I heard her sing at the faculty concert. That changed everything.

Sadie’s songs and supple voice are disarming. They draw listeners into intimate, ordinary moments that overflow with familiar joy and sadness. Honestly, more than once, I thought, I’m not sure I like this song, only to find by its end that I’d laughed, or my throat had constricted with emotion. There’s something else: she so there, so present, singing from some timeless place. Maybe she knows she’s performing, but we can’t tell.

The word that keeps coming to mind when I listen to Luke Concannon is “soulful.” He wears his heart on his sleeve, which is very close to the hands playing some great guitar grooves. Check out his website. There you can see what a big and optimistic commitment he has to building community, making and amplifying connection between himself and listeners, and among listeners like you and me.

While our afternoon with these two will offer some exciting contrasts, I can’t wait to see the chemistry of them playing and singing together!

Hi! John and Laurelyn here.

We have a simple aim in mind: live a little more each day in such a way that when we die, we have few regrets. Not a life of more, but a life that is rich, deep, and connected to people, those we love and whoever we encounter.

Take a look at Laurelyn’s art and consider joining us for a house concert.
