Old Hat String Band, Mar 30

/

For us, listening to recorded music usually brings on a state of amazement that humans can do that. What’s different about hearing live music is that it is spending time with people who you wish lived next door so that you could hang out with them more often. We developed a little crush on this trio – Steve Roy, Whitney Roy, and Amanda Kowalski – after hearing them them at Club Passim. They were having even more fun playing than we were listening. We invited them to come hang out so you could get to know them, too.

Since then, I participated in a workshop that Steve co-taught at string camp last summer. He’s deeply knowledgeable about the wide and deep tradition of American traditional music and an encouraging teacher. After hearing the band play again at Ossipee Valley Music Festival, Laurelyn and I were really glad they agreed to play here. In the old hat tunes they play and in their own new music, you’ll hear the tight harmonies and driving rhythm of the bluegrass and old time lineage to which they belong. And as a sweet bonus, Julie Metcalf will be joining them on fiddle.

Get the Powerlines album or some great merch. Or get both at the concert, signed by the band!

Also, you can hear these folks in other band incarnations. Steve and Whitney play old-time in Wishbone. We’ve heard them. Wow. Hear Steve in High Range and check out his violin-making. He’s also a big proponent of the ukulele. Hearing him play proves the instrument is far from a toy. Whitney can be heard in The Hazel Project and Fox and Roy, among others. Amanda has played with has played with many bluegrass, old time, and folk greats (Della Mae, Abigail Washburn, Uncle Earl, Tony Trishka). Because talent is apparently unevenly spread through the universe, she is an accomplished photographer and videographer.

Hi! John and Laurelyn here.

We have a simple aim in mind: live a little more each day in such a way that when we die, we have few regrets. Not a life of more, but a life that is rich, deep, and connected to people, those we love and whoever we encounter.

Take a look at Laurelyn’s art and consider joining us for a house concert.
